Pickett's Charge was a decisive and dramatic infantry assault on July 3, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

It was ordered by Confederate General Robert E. Lee and led in part by George Pickett. About 12,500 Confederate soldiers advanced nearly a mile across open fields toward fortified Union positions commanded by George G. Meade.

The result was devastating:

Heavy Confederate casualties (over 50% in many units)
The attack failed to break Union lines
Marked the turning point of the Civil War

Today, Pickett’s Charge is remembered as one of the most famous—and costly—assaults in American military history, often symbolizing both courage and the high cost of strategic miscalculation.
What “The Cavalier” statue is
A limited-edition pewter sculpture produced in the 1990s (commonly by Chilmark).
Depicts a mounted Civil War cavalry officer—well-groomed, bearded, and posed in a composed, almost aristocratic style.
The title “Cavalier” reflects the romanticized image of a gentleman soldier (historically, “cavalier” means a horseman or aristocratic fighter).
